wow

its been a long time since i was last here. nearly 2 years have passed and an old friend of mine whom ive not spoken to in a long time persuaded me to come give this old game another go.

I doubt anyone here would remember me so i shant bother looking for attention and an ego massage. I used to play on Uranus server (pre-doy move) and then played a week or two on terra before i left the game.

I know nothing of the "new" game really tbh, except for a few sparse details about obviously what doy is like and the new areas (canyon being filled with fire mobs etc).

I think this might be asking a lot but can anyone sum up sort of 2 years (ish i think) changes, basically from just after doy upgrade to present day and give me the gist of what ive missed.

Im not into the whole my clan is bigger than your clan bs so please keep any flames out of this thread, i think im too old for that. Id just like to hear an honest impartial view of life in nc atm, what more is there to do, how is the roleplaying these days, how is the pvp? are the classes any more balanced? what is the best challenge? what is the easiest class to play? are monks still point and click?

What hot topics are there at the moment? how is the balance of power going? is the zoo open yet? last i heard it was work in progress.

Are tanks still a lot of fun? do spies cut it in combat? is wisdom of ceres really a grind?

What are the major clans in play at the moment? (i dont know if i will recognise any of them).

Well ill sign out with this now and speak with you all soon, if someone could answer a few of my questions i would be greatful.

thanks and good night

i think i meant grateful there but i can find no way to edit my post.

i guess thats a full member privelige.

I guess with no replies this forum rarely gets looked at, i guess nobody regulates here any more....

There are good points and bad.

The NC2 beta had greatly improved fps and textures, but when it went to open beta it developed a nasty mem leak and a problem loading textures/models, meaning fps lag and general slowness. Though this has been adressed and itn't as bad as it was, it's not fully solved.

Balance is knda as it was at the NC1 end, but there have been a number of skill effect changes that in my opinion have been bad for variation and some aspects of balance.
PPUs are as ever, though KK has shown some interest in fixing them (though it was a while ago now).

PvP is as healthy as ever, and RP is still what you make of it.

so in short its no different then.

Game play wise no. NC2 is an expansion afterall.

ok more important question then, how is the community now? im not expecting mindblowing changes here, i witnessed a few weeks of doy so i know about the new content etc.

the thing that made me leave was the lack of sportsmanship in various contingents of the community, some would argue that my vision of neocron may never happen but ive found it in other games. I like the spirit of competition, hence why i chose a pvp game in the first place. I am by no means good at it but i wouldnt say i was bad either. I enjoy the fights but not the arguments, i hate lame tactics and dirty tricks and the "do anything i can including outnumber my opponent 15-1 at op fights", if this still goes on then nc might not be for me, or at least op fighting might not.

Is there much roleplay now? Do people remain in character or do they get told to stfu whenever they try? Despite its bad points nc still has many good memories for me, The Regulator Wars, the Syndicate wars, my first trip to see the basecommander, the funny comments people have made on team speak, the first trip i took further than point red nearly 3 years ago now. My first warbot hack (hacking was so cool back then) and many more things besides. I appreciate i am not likely to relive many of these things but i hope to at least bump into a few old friends along the way.

Sharing a warbot cola in roccos fish bar was often a highlight of my gaming time here, the community as was, although somewhat small on Uranus, was one of the best gaming communities ive ever been a part of. I had people to love, people to hate, people to shoot at and people who shoot back. I tire of politics and arguments, i play to have fun.

If there is still much of this part of nc then i will certainly take the 7 day trial in a bid to see the rest of what i am missing.

Neocron is worth trying out no matter how you look at it. The community is mixed. For every person that would step all over you there is another to help (much like in RL) I was out pking in MB and CRP and never griefed or threw swear words for when I killed someone or they killed me. I see it as a hunt, the hunter and the hunted. The tables can turn quickly and roles switched. This is one of the interesting and fun aspects of NC. No matter were you stand you can die at any time

p.s. except for safe zones :p

As long as there is the caacity to use 'unfair' tactics, people will use them. Any advantage is nworth taking. As for OP fights, if your OP is under attack, are you going to say, 'I think we'll take just 6 of us today'? or are you going to bring everyone you can?

Para still wrecks much of NC's PvP, as do PPUs in their current state, but untill that changes, all you can do is take the moral high ground (as long as you don't brag about ti :p).

William Antrim

yes dribble joy, i am. The ops mean nothing to me, i do not "own" any part of neocron, i may attempt to force my will occasionally but that is only to get a fight. I do not want to stand around waiting at an op for over an hour only for the other side to turn up with 3x the people and the fight be over in 30 seconds or less. I should probably explain a portion of this thinking. If a clan fights by itself (no matter how many players it has online) then fair play, but when that clan makes you wait a half hour or more to get themselves and ALL of their allies together as well and then comes and crushes you this is wrong. I tired of all the "we are one faction" lines and the "we all used to be in the same clan" excuses. If clans cannot fight alone without allies/faction allies then i can see the op scene getting boring for me. I like to have a good clean fight that goes either one way or the other and maybe afterwards opponents actually respect eachother, there are games with communities just like this, i play in one.
This was always my biggest gripe with neocron. i have better things to do with my evenings than that. I thnk op fighting may not be for me then, i get more than enough of that element from my games by playing unreal tournament.

William Antrim
15-11-05, 15:06
p.s how is neofrag?

Dribble Joy
15-11-05, 15:09
yes dribble joy, i am.
Huh?

Anyway NF is as ever.

William Antrim
15-11-05, 15:14
you said are you gonna say oh we will only take 6 people this time. if the other team has 6 id be taking no more than 8 tbh, i believe in fair fights and the thrill of winning against an evenly matched team, in numbers and in skill. i found this element elsewhere but that game didnt have the community feeling that nc has, perhaps i am looking at this game as no more than a giant chat room now, or at least a stage to act out my theatrical performances for i do like a bit of roleplay too.

how is the pvp outside of op fights? does fightnight still go on? do people still haunt neofrag? (inside i mean rather than outside looking for cheap kills).

Dribble Joy
15-11-05, 15:28
If you don't know how many people are coming, why take the risk?

It was more of a rhetorical question really, and I am largely playing the devil here.
Unless you formalise an OP fight and restrict the numbers via some means, OP fights will ony be 'fair' by chance. Remember that an OP fight is for the possesion of the OP, and other considerations are largely irrelevant or secondary at best.

I hate some aspects of the commuinty here, but there is little oyu can do in the end othe rthan channel it away from some areas of the game.

William Antrim
15-11-05, 15:38
i value your input. as suggested i think op fights will b an occasional thing for me. ill stick to unreal for that kind of combat. (at least there are no monks).

so whats the deal with this evo thing i keep reading about? and are faction councillors more visible now? are events run by players/gms often? do you hear about them in advance or is it a case of right place right time these days?

Sorry if im asking so many questions, its nice to speak to a familiar name thats all.

Dribble Joy
15-11-05, 15:48
There are player run events (though if they are not GM supported they can be prone to raiding) and you can contact GMs for an event.

The Faction Councillor project kinda died with NC1, though it was (somewhat unsucessfully) revived with the 'Ceres' project with NC2. Now they have Faction Assistants, which are pretty much the same thing as the old FCs.

Familiar person?

William Antrim
15-11-05, 16:02
Ok so there is some room for player run events and stuff. that sounds cool. i can imagine the raiders would obviously come also. it happens all the time. at least there are people who do like to get involved with that side of things, tbh that would be the thrill to me, to put something back into the community in the form of events and stuff. its more fun i think.

what do you mean by familiar person?

infamy.

With the exception of Roger Ramjet, Szorksmok, tratos and rabbi fang, ive not found anyone else who i used to game with. Ive seen a fair few forum oldies but only a handful whom used to actually play uranus, therefore as a forumite and a uranus player, you are familiar to me.

Well even GM supported can have their problems ;)

Take this week for example, Spawn event at the dump for prizes in crates.
Largely owned by DOY chars as they Pk'd loads of city chars without reprisal :(

Kinda stacked in DOY favour anyways being in a sector full with DOY bots lol .

Bring on a city event!

ok a dozen names i am familiar with. Old friends and indeed old enemies. I am waiting to find my old cd key atm, (i have 2 of them somewhere) as the demo wotsit is downloaded on my pc, i just need to get patched up and reactivate my account.

Am i right in thinking if i have the upgrade downloaded i can just activate my old accounts with a credit card and they should work fine? or do i need to reinstall nc1 and all that other gubbins?

So what are the ex-laard chaps doing now then? the posh boys with their posh voices.... :)

RogerRamjet

You should be able to still transfer NC1 chars if u email accounts.

As for LAARD, me, Kid, Paolo, and Origin (i think, occaisonally) still play, and Xenocide and Koth are supposed to be on their way back. We kinda broke up early NC2 since we couldnt survive being a small clan, and OP war'ing with one PPU (Masta Blasta FTW), and everyone tended to take everything seriously. At the moment we're all generally floating around clanless and playing different servers.

It just aint Uranus no more... :D

What's up man? Good to see ya thinking about coming back to the cron. I have left and come back a couple times. The new 2.1 looks like it might be good, but I will have to wait a few weeks while getting settled in the sandbox. What is that brother of yours up to these days ??

Who is vae victis in game then roger? the name rings a bell somewhere at the back of my mind as someone i ought to know but sadly i do not remember names, only deeds.
