View Full Version : What is neocron like?
Hello, I used to play the game planetside, an MMOFPS, and it was amazing until the devs made all of the worst decisions and made it so one player could wield the power of 10-15 foot soldiers alone. I enjoy the MMOFPS genre. This game seems to be a hybrid, having crafting levels stats etc and it has PVE (planetside was 100% pvp). I want to know what gameplay for neocron is like, if it is an MMOFPS and what stats have to do with everything (planetside had no stats)
stats affect what weapons/Implants/armor you can use ...they also affect things like Damage/Rate of fire/ range
Its less large scale warfare and more small team skirmishes
also PvP before you cap can be aggravating to say the least(although still fun..youll usually lose...although ultimatly anyone can kill anyone regardless of lvl)
luckily it doesnt take long to be pvp ready...

joran summed it up pretty well...to build on that a bit:
You can play the game in first or third person view...it has interactive combat as opposed to press the attack key and watch 'em go...your attributes, skills and, at times, class affect what you can and can't use
so really, you control the character and your character's abilities define what can be done
If you're in it for the pvp aspect mainly with a bit of help from nice peoples in the game you could be ready for it in no time
So it is an MMOFPS, im glad. How is the PVP i am currently a hardcore WoW player and live to raid. I asume NC has dungeons and a raid(20-40 man instance) equivilent
not exactly....most environments are meant for single runners or small teams...there is nothing in game that cannot be defeated with 2 ppl working together
(the PPU (read: Cleric) is alot stronger than in other games)
PvP is the reason most player play(although a few do play for RP(koS them :P ) and a few for the PvE...far and away most ppl play for the pvp)
Its awesome...although sometimes it can be hard to find a fight
the max size for one team is 10 players ...sometimes in Outpost wars there will be several teams fighting against one another(thats the closest thing to a raid youll find)
so those dragons, floating jellyfish and combat mechs are 2 manable and soloable? and are there dungeons
It does have dungeons, altho 20-40 people is a bit overkill, you'll probably see teams with around 8-15 in the biggest dungeons.
The PvP is awesome, tactics can actually play a role and not just who has the best equipment and stat setup.
From what i can gather from your posts you'll like NeoCron, but be warned its not easy for a new player, theres a lot to learn and going head first into the game will probably make you even more confused, so read up on some guides and find a class/proffesion/faction that you like.

there are many dungeons (the progression)
The lvl 1 sewers (for newbies)
the lvl 2 sewers
Pepper Park Sewers lvls 1 and 2
Aggie Pits/ Abandoned Storage centers/ Energy Core
Swamp Caves
El Farid
Chaos Caves
DoY Tunnels
Reagents Fortress (this is supposed to be one of the hardest dungeons ..although currently damage is bugged and it is one of the easiest)
Wisdom of Ceres Labs
think theres a few more too
Ideally for XP you would want a well rounded team of about 4-5 runners
for money you would want as few as possible :P
[edit] Neocron is not like any game you have everplayed ... os dont go in with a preset notion ...for the most part quests are a punishment...not part of the story(with the exception of the newbie missions and epic mission)
how do levels work whats the level cap, is there a talent system like WoW, and what are vehicles like. I was a APC/tank driver in planetside
you have you 5 base stats
they each lvl independintly of the others
when you take damage you will gain constitution XP
when you fire a gun or swing a sword you will gain strength XP
Using mental Psi abilities increases your psi XP and Intelligence
Using High tech weapons and doing trade skills will raise your dexterity
you even get XP when you die
what do your different stats determind, and how are vehicles obtained
In Neocron each class has different caps for the 5 main stats, you can increase your stats above the caps by using Implants, Armour, Drugs (temporary).
No matter what class you are a capped character will be rank xx/60, the xx refers to a combat rank that will change depending on what type of equipment you have and how effective you are at using your weapon, but the 60 is the overall rank which is an average of your level in all 5 main stats.
When you gain a level in one of the main stats, you're given 5 skill points to distribute among the subskills of that stat, the subskills determine how good your going to be at certain things, a high rifle combat skill increasing damage done with rifles, and a very high construction skill means you'll be able to construct very good quality weapons and equipment.
you buy vehicles(or if you choose the driver proffession you get a free one for a reward for your newbie missions)
Stats affect what weapons/armor/implants you can use
they also affect your runspeed
and they also affect things like rate of fire/range/ and damage on weapons you can use (ie. if a gun requires 20 strenth (mainstat) and 55 Heavy combat(substat of strenth) then as soon as you can use it you might have a 15m range and do 35 damage per hit or something...if you overcap the Heavy combat (to say 80 or someat) your range on the same gun would be maybe 30m instead of 15 and do 90 damage)
leveling is very fast because each stat levels independent from the others
the level caps are different for each stat, and depend on the class you choose
just to forewarn you at low lvls weapons are weak...you could use a whole clip on a machine gun to kill one rat(as an example...) also at low levels rate of fire is pretty slow and feels a little more like a dice roll than at higher lvls
leave your law enforcer chip in your head unless your sure you want other players to be able to kill you(yeah I know your sure YOU want to KILL OTHER PLAYERS, but think more about others killing you before removing it)

heh not true about the /60 ....most ppl are closer to /65 /67 ish once capped
Deus Ex MMO is the best possible explanation.

Yes with implants, but with base stat caps and no implants or PA etc, all classes will have a /60 rank.
how powerfull and usefull on vehicles, and if i leave my vehicle can someone else take it and will it despawn. Also how important/effective are they in PVP. I planetside vehicles could make or brake battles. I also want to know what OP fights are like
very rarely will a vehicle make or break a battle(although the DOY bomber is pretty hard core)
Vehicles will despawn a little while after you exit them
they cannot be stolen...but you can blow up other peoples vehicles
Some vehicles are indestructible
many vehicles do have weapons attached .... but afaik only one or two times have i seen vehicles turn the tide of a battle
(although the troop carriers can bring in a new team quickly to mop up)
do people like using vehicles, in planetside sometimes it was hard to keep people you didnt want out of your gunner seat and in tribes vengeance noone will touch most of them. this only matters if vehicles have multi person crews. Also how powerfull are vehicle weapons compaired to player weapons
In regards to keeping people out of your vehicles, its easy in neocron as people have to ask permission to enter it, they right click on your vehicle and you get a popup box that asks if you want to let them enter, and you can click yes or no.
but do people want to be gunners/pasengers?

Actually, yes arrow, they do, I for instance, am working on obtaining what is called "WoC" or Wisdom of Ceres, which at end game, are basically sort of like bonus levels allowing you to use special equipment. And I "gun" for people who drive tanks. We then go hunt the largest monsters possible for the largest experiance gain and cash flow.
People will want to gun for you to gain STR exp and take down large monsters rather quickly (for instance, me and a friend last night had to kill a messload of fire monsters for a quest, so we hopped in my Revler 4x4, and he used the 30mm machine gun on the back to take em down quick).
People will ALSO want to be passengers, as some people would need to get to anouther outpost or city that would otherwise be really dangerous to go by foot to.
this game sounds realy fun but i dont want to give up WoW

people killing each other...
is it just plain pvp, no objectives or special things hat need to be done to take an outpost, and what are the outposts themselfs like?

Wow is nothing compared to NC
I'd say in terms of content, actually it's the other way around:
NC has nothing compared to WoWs' quest lines and very little compared to the history.
NC has nothing compared to WoWs "end game PvE" (You think Dire Maul or Scholo is small/easy? you should try WoWs only real end game pve "instances (they don't have instances btw, they share their "instanced" zones between everyone)).
NC has nothing compared to WoWs balance (there are no UTTERLY PVP DESTROYING classes!).
NC has nothing compared to WoWs customisation//variation.
NC is no where near as "Big" as WoW.
HOWEVER:
When it comes to actual PvP Action, NC is king, of all.
This game is cutthroat, it's hardcore, it's down right gritty and it's atmospheric.
That's, stuff WoW doesn't have.
is it just plain pvp, no objectives or special things hat need to be done to take an outpost, and what are the outposts themselfs like?
Well its mostly PvP but in order to "take" an outpost you need to Hack 4 layers one of which is in Hacknet. So whilst fighting off the owners you also need to have players hacking which you also need to defend.
A friend of mine watched me and my clan at an OP war and he plays WOW all the time and he said it looks Hectic as fuck and you know what it is :D
Love it! FPS for the win, not point and click till i'm bored out of my skull

Well, NC did allow mods for a while, untill some people exploited it and got the mod forum closed down :P
PvP is rather fun here, sometimes its hillarious to PK someone from a distance so they belive they got killed by a bug or a mob they failed to see and they whine about it over some chat channel :)
One major advantage is that you level VERY fast in comparison to most other games and when you learn the tricks of the trade to level fast, you spend time leveling up quickly and actually PLAYING with a character setup than leveling for 12 months wondering "what will i be when i reach cap"?
There is something here for soloers, team players, PKers and RP'ers as well..

Hey, the leveling speed and difficulty depends on the character class you choose ! It's important to notice it, i think ;)
I havent played yet but I'd say I wouldnt call it deus ex online. I mean lets get down to the begining of cyberpunk and call it Neuromancer online. Cyberpunk 2020 or shadowrun.

what do you mean NC is free now? could you elaborate please
Edit: also how often is new content such as new items/mobs/abilities added
